Five-year extension of operation and maintenance contract in Egypt

September 1, 2016 Samir Idris

The new contract was signed on July, 27 2016 in Cairo between Wadi El Nile Cement Company (WNCC) and FLSmidth Operation & Maintenance. The contract is a five year continuation of the existing contract signed back in 2010. In addition, WNCC also ordered an upgrade of the plant from 6,000 to 7,200 ton of clinker per day; the upgrade will be executed as an integral part of the O&M contract.

"The continuation of the contract is a visible proof of the successful partnership we have with WNCC. We have now operated their 6,000 tpd plant for almost five years. Today, the WNCC plant is one of the most energy efficient plants in Egypt which of course has a positive effect on the production cost for WNCC", - Samir Idris, Commercial Director and Head of Global Sales, FLSmidth Operation & Maintenance

The initial contract will expire end of 2016 and the new contract term is from January 2017 to December 2021. The upgrade to 7,200 tpd is planned to be operational from summer 2017. The WNCC plant is a complete FLSmidth configuration and is one of only two cement plants in Egypt that has installed a vertical roller mill for the clinker grinding. Egypt has a total of three FLSmidth OK™ 42-4 vertical mills.

The partnership between WNCC and FLSmidth O&M proved its worth and strength during 2013 and 2014 when fuel restrictions (gas) in Egypt severely influenced the clinker production and made it necessary to minimize cost of operation by mutual agreement between FLSmidth O&M and WNCC. WNCC was among the first cement producers in Egypt to introduce coal and thereby eliminated their dependency of gas, which continued to be restricted. In mid-2015 an FLSmidth ATOX® 25 coal mill was commissioned and the plant could be operated at full capacity again. This allowed WNCC to not only supply cement to their regular customers on time but also to increase their market share.
