When planning an expansion of its existing plant, Al Khalij Cement of Qatar opted for a project that combines premium technology from FLSmidth with a cost efficient EPC contract with CNBM.
In 2007, FLSmidth supplied the first production line for Al Khalij’s Umm Bab plant situated some 80 km west of Doha, the Qatari capital. With a rated production of 5,800 tpd, the new production line will be almost a duplicate of the first line. FLSmidth worked closely with the client in designing a project that would meet his main objectives:
• To use cutting edge, well-proven technology and engineering
• To secure a competitive price and an easily manageable project
The client chose FLSmidth as main equipment supplier based on the confidence gained in building and implementing the first line, and CNBM (China National Building Materials) as EPC contractor due to its competitive offering and experience.

The new line is being erected next to the existing line, both comprising FLSmidth technology.

The construction and installation of the new line is scheduled to take place in record time: 20 months from mobilisation to first flame in kiln. The plant expansion will enable Al Khalij Cement to meet the rapidly growing demand for cement in Qatar. The economy is thriving, due particularly to the country’s huge oil and gas production, and many infrastructure and other construction projects are ongoing, mainly in and around the nation’s capital of Doha.
The high level of construction activity is also reflected in the recent signing of a large contract with FLSmidth’s Material Handling Division for a complete stockyard system with a capacity of 30 million tonnes building materials per year.
The main equipment and engineering to be provided by FLSmidth includes
• raw and cement mills
• raw meal and cement silos
• connecting conveyor systems
• fabric filters
• electrical systems and automation.
