Our business philosophy is to help strengthen our customers’ ability to remain competitive in the challenging landscape of tomorrow’s cement industry.
Societies all over the world are growing steadily and becoming more economically developed. With millions moving from poverty to middle class, there is greater demand for better living standards. The resulting urbanisation and industrialization are key drivers behind an ever-expanding infrastructure.
Cement is the essential ingredient in concrete, which is the strongest, most flexible and cost-efficient building material and, in turn, the most difficult to replace. Without concrete, the costs of infrastructure would increase significantly, and it is second only to water as the world’s most consumed good annually, measured in total volume.
But producing cement has significant socio-economic costs, not least in terms of emissions of CO, SO2, NOx, TSP and CO2 and intensive energy consumption. CO2 emissions from cement production currently represent about five percent of global CO2 emissions, but growth, modernization and even climate change mitigation and adaption measures are expected to increase cement production by between 50 and 75 percent by 2050, which will increase emissions even further*.
The major global challenge in cement production is therefore how to balance increasing global demand with the need to reduce emissions and energy consumption. The critical factor for cement producers is the ability to boost productivity. This means minimising the use of resources, optimising output and maximising return on assets – in essence, doing more with less – while achieving a sustainable and competitive cement business.
Good, proven and sustainable business
To meet this challenge, the cement industry needs to decouple the amount of emissions and energy associated with producing cement – in other words, get more cement with less environmental impact. This is the approach used by FLSmidth to help cement producers worldwide in creating sustainable businesses.
For instance, we have helped one of our customers lower energy consumption by 14.5 percent compared with the industry average and to position the plant between the top-performing percentile and global weighted average in terms of energy efficiency. We also helped secure very low emission levels of SO2 and TSP, reducing dust emissions by a factor of 3** without affecting
Investing in the future
Additionally, we help our customers invest in knowledge and training of their employees. Since 2009, FLSmidth Institute has annually trained more than 5,000 people in cement production developing insight into the complete cement process and its equipment. This kind of training – also provided through operation and maintenance contracts – enables cement producers to ensure consistency in the operation of the plant as well as more robust build-up of experience and competencies.
Helping cement producers increase focus on safety has also proven to be highly beneficial. Lost-time injury frequency rates improved by nearly 100 percent in both 2014 and 2015, resulting in some of the best performing plants, according to available data. These and other of our key competencies could contribute significantly to helping build a strong, sustainable and competitive business.
