OK mill’s great success in Brazil

Brazilian cement producers aim to continuously reduce their carbon footprint and increase the energy efficiency of their operations. The OK™ cement mill has proven to be the preferred VRM technology for the production of all of their many blended cement products.

With a long tradition and significant experience in the production of blended cements, Brazil has a clinker-to-cement ratio below 70 percent, making it one of the lowest in the world. Higher grinding capacities, improved efficiencies, increased clinker substitution and finer product residues allow cement producers to constantly improve their operations and increase output.

Additionally, there is great focus on the reduction of CO2 emissions and energy usage, demonstrated by the use of materials such as slag, fly ash, limestone and pozzolan, all of which reduce fuel combustion and emissions from processing raw materials during clinker production.

70 percent market share
The use of VRMs, which further improves energy efficiency, is particularly significant in the cement industry in Brazil. FLSmidth supplied the first cement VRM – an OK cement mill – to the Brazilian market in 2006 and began operations to grind slag cement in April 2009. Within 15 hours of operation, the mill had achieved guaranteed capacity and fineness targets.

Since then, 20 additional OK mills have been supplied to Brazilian cement manufacturers. With OK cement mills accounting for over 70 percent of the production by VRMs in 2015, the share ofcement produced in OK cement mills has rapidly increased.

This has resulted in the country’s cement producers having one of the highest usage rates for VRM cement grinding in the global cement industry. In 2015, seven different cement producers ground approximately 18 million tonnes of cement in OK cement mills, accounting for 28 percent of total domestic production.

Established reputation
The proven choice for grinding blended cements with one or more wet components, the OK mill has shown its versatility within consistent, stable operation throughout a range of cement, blended cement and slag cement products.

Furthermore, it is easy to operate from initial start-up, achieving rated capacity quickly after start-up. In the Americas for example, the average OK mill commissioning time to achieve guaranteed performance is two weeks.

With sales of more than 150 mills globally, 21 in Brazil alone, OK cement mill installations have all achieved designed cement quality, efficiency and capacity guarantees.
